Nitin Chandrakant Desai was an Indian art director, production designer, and film and television producer. He was best known for his work in Marathi and Hindi films, including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Lagaan (2001), Devdas (2002), Jodhaa Akbar (2008) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015).
Desai was born in Mumbai on 9 August 1965. He studied art at the Sir JJ School of Art and began his career as an art director in the early 1990s. His first film was Parinda (1989), directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He went on to work with some of the leading directors in Bollywood, including Ashutosh Gowarikar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani and Ketan Mehta.
Desai was a master of creating realistic and visually stunning sets. He won four National Film Awards for Best Art Direction, for his work on Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan, Devdas and Jodhaa Akbar. He also won three Filmfare Best Art Direction Awards.
In addition to his work in films, Desai also designed the sets for the World Cultural Festival 2016 at Delhi. He was also a film producer, and his production company, Chandrakant Productions, produced the film Desh Devi (2002).
Desai died by suicide on 2 August 2023 at the age of 57. He was found dead at his studio, ND Studios in Karjat, Maharashtra. His death was a shock to the film industry, and he was mourned by his colleagues and fans alike.
Desai's work will be remembered for its beauty, realism and attention to detail. He was one of the most talented art directors in the history of Indian cinema, and his work helped to create some of the most iconic films of all time.
